南アフリカ発、1981年JAZZファンク激レア盤が待望のLP再発＆初のCD化リリース。ブギーの名曲「Hook it up」、「I’m So Strong Now」ほか、アフロジャズから、ディスコ、レゲエまで、80年代南アフリカクラブシーンで醸成された唯一無二のグルーヴを詰め込んだ幻の名盤が今蘇る。
70年代後半からファンク、ソウルなどの影響を大いに盛り込んだジャズフュージョンバンドとして活躍していたSpirits Rejoiceが、ギタリストのPaul Petersonを中心に始めたプロジェクト。シングル曲「Shine On」のヒットをきっかけに作られた今作は、Doctor Rhythm名義では唯一のアルバムで、現在ではレアグルーヴファンを中心に世界中のコレクターが探し求める、幻の名盤となった。時代性とバンドの音楽性の高さに裏打ちされたポップセンスから、クラブミュージックとしても近年再評価されている。今回、アートワークを担当するShiro Ishihara(SNEA)による、オリジナルの世界観を踏襲しながらも新たに作り直されるデザインにも注目だ。
Long-awaited LP reissue and first CD release of an extremely rare 1981 Jazz Funk album from South Africa. The album includes the boogie classics “Hook it up” and “I’m So Strong Now” as well as Afro-jazz, disco, reggae, and other unique grooves from the South African club scene in the 80s.
This project was initiated by Spirits Rejoice, a jazz fusion band that had been active since the late 70s, incorporating a great deal of funk, soul, and other influences, with guitarist Paul Peterson at the helm. This album, made after the hit single “Shine On,” is the only album under the name Doctor Rhythm, and is now a rare gruelove classic sought after by collectors around the world, especially rare gruelove fans. It has been reevaluated in recent years as club music due to its pop sensibility backed by the zeitgeist and the band’s high level of musicianship. The artwork by Shiro Ishihara (SNEA), who is in charge of the artwork this time, is also notable for its new design, which follows the original design while being newly reworked.
